Piet Oudolf presides over planting of his design, which began in 2003.

In 2002, the city of New York decided to go ahead with the project to restyle a 10 hectare area of the park as a homage to the victims, survivors and all persons affected by this tragedy and other conflicts.

The area will integrate perennials, grasses and flowerbulbs, and will be called the "Gardens of Remembrance".
