Plant Brief

Heuchera
'Citronelle'
from Thierry Delabroye
France

Introduced 2007

Dense mounds of citrus coloured foliage make a beautifully bright spactacle, especially when contrasted with darker plants.

Sprays of cream flowers rise above the foliage late in the season.

H. 'Citronelle' is exceptional for providing this sought-after colouring in a plant which grows vigorously and has better tolerance for heat and humidity and sunlight than many other cultivars, though shade protection from strong sunlight is still recommended. Its robust qualities are attributed to having H. villosa species in its ancestry.

Heuchera 'Citronelle'
31-05-2006 14:27 Lightning strikes twice as the offspring of H. 'Caramel' enters the world.
By Miriam Young

In May 2005 Sandrine was preparing H. 'Caramel' plants for an exhibition at Courson in France, when she noticed that one of them was completely yellow, but with the same dense habit and vigorous growth.

Heuchera 'Citronelle' at Thierry's nursery

She and Thierry immediately seperated it from the batch and ran to the telephone to call Luc Klinkhammer, the trader who'd spotted the potential in H. 'Caramel' and launched it to the world. Bizarrely, Luc replied that a similar discovery had been made almost simultaniously at a production laboratory in The Netherlands, where a newly propagated H. 'Caramel' had emerged in yellow. Truly a case of lightning striking twice!

H. 'Citronelle' gleams brightly next to its stablemates H. ''Mocha', H. 'Caramel' and H. 'Brownies', as proudly shown off by Thierry.

Once again, a strong-growing Heuchera with bright citrus foliage was a plant in the right place at the right time, so the new variety was rushed into production to be unleashed on the world in 2007 as H. 'Citronelle'.
