Breakthrough for cutflower Delphiniums
06-02-2004 15:37 If you've ever cut your own Delphiniums, you may wonder why they don't seem to last very long in a vase. This is because cut Delphiniums need to be treated in a silver thiosuphate (STS) solution to prevent them from withering very quickly.
By Miriam Young
Silver thiosulphate is, however, poisonous to humans, and its use for this purpose is likely to be banned in the near future.   The consequence of this, unthinkable as it may be, is that Delphiniums will cease to be available as cut flowers.

However, René is, as ever, ahead of the game, and is well on the way to creating a Delphinium that can survive as a cut flower without the need for silver-thiosuphate treatment.
