Plant Brief

Heuchera
'Mocha'
from Thierry Delabroye
France

Introduced 2007

An imposing mound of massive near-black foliage, H. 'Mocha' is not only one of the darkest Heucheras money can buy, but also probably the largest example of a very dark-leaved variety.

It keeps its leaves through the winter and the new spring foliage emerges copper-brown before darkening, so provides an interesting colour show through the year.

Sprays of cream flowers rise high late in the season to provide a contrasting feature.

H. 'Mocha' has the H. villosa species in its ancestry, giving superior strength to similarly coloured varieties and making it a great all-round performer in the garden, being able to withstand heat, humidity and exposure to sunlight that would make many others wither.

Spread: 20"/ 50cm
Hardiness: US zones 4-9

Common name:
Coral Bells

Heuchera 'Mocha'
31-05-2006 15:54 Inspired by the size and quality of his own H. 'Brownies', Thierry set out to see what would happen when he crossed it.
By Miriam Young

H. 'Brownies' was a 2003 discovery of Thierry's. A seedling of the same mutation of H. villosa 'Autumn Bride' that gave us H. 'Caramel', it forms an emormous, elegantly dome-shaped mound of huge chocolate-tinted foliage.

Convinced that he could improve on H. 'Brownies' already desirable features, Thierry set to work crossing it with other dark foliaged heucheras.

Next to Thierry's hand you can see how enormous H. 'Mocha's intensely dark leaves are

In 2005 he finally got a plant with exceptionally large and dark foliage which proved itself as a very strong grower, and this was selected to be introduced as H. ''Mocha' in 2007.
