New Heucheras possibilities

Here is a selection of new, as yet un-named Heucheras that are being tested in the Wijnex trial garden.

Plants are obseved for their habits as well as their colours. So although a plant may emerge with spectacularly coloured foliage, if it has a weak or untidy growing habit then it won't be introduced until these qualities are improved by further crossings.

The Secret Garden
03-12-2003 11:49 Hidden away on Aad Wijnhout’s nursery is a trial garden where new and recently introduced varieties are put through their paces.
By Miriam Young

A range of genera such as Sedum, Phlox, Campanula, Echinacea and Geranium are under observation here. The site is often visited by owners of nurseries from around the world, keen to see what new varieties they will be able to offer their customers in the near future.

But it’s the Heucheras that take centre stage, with over 60 varieties in the line up.

Constantly on the lookout for new seedlings and mutations, Aad has already brought us the ‘Planet Series’ and of course the Darwin PlantSpotters variety H.‘Swirling Fantasy’

The Heuchera 'Planet' series.
Clockwise from top - 'Mercury', 'Saturn', 'Venus', 'Neptune', 'Mars'.

These varieties were introduced in 2003 and may be available from your Darwin PlantSpotters stockist.

H. ‘Prince of Orange’ is the cultivar from which the sought-after H. ‘Amber Waves’ is derived. In Aad’s opinion, H. ‘Prince of Orange’ is a much more vigorous plant, and well worth growing.

Both H. ‘Swirling Fantasy’ and H. ‘Mars’ have produced seedlings which Aad thinks could be promising newcomers.
